I was interested in all sorts of needle crafts and dressmaking as a teenager, but it was a book about smocking (originally known as pleat work in medieval times) that caught my imagination. I worked to master the technique and I have been making smocked clothes, reproduction farmers smocks and needle crafted gifts ever since.
As a qualified school teacher and adult education tutor I have used my teaching skills to inspire and teach others to smock. The settings have included workshops, one-to-one sessions and lecturing at WI’s Denman College.
I am now finding other ways to use smocking and other sewing techniques to create a wide variety of different needle crafts. Ranging from smocked Christmas baubles and ribbon flowers to bespoke clothing including wedding dresses.
